Oud perfume explained: mukhallat, saffron oud and rose oud

Oud — agarwood, oudh, عود — is the resin that forms inside Aquilaria trees when they are infected by a particular mould. It takes decades, which is why genuine oud oil is among the most expensive raw materials in perfumery, and why the way a house handles it tells you almost everything about its blends.

Cambodian versus Assamese character

Cambodian oud is sweeter and fruitier, with a dried-fig and honey warmth that reads friendly even to first-time wearers. Assamese (Indian) oud is darker, leathery and animalic — the profile most Emirati and Saudi wearers grew up with. Our oud collection uses both: the rose and saffron blends lean Cambodian, the smoky signature blends lean Assamese.

Three ways oud is worn in the Gulf

• Mukhallat — literally “mixed”. A traditional Arabian blend of oud with rose, amber, musk and saffron. Rounded, warm, built for layering with bakhoor. Mukhallat Emarat and Mukhallat Maryam are our classic takes.
• Saffron oud — oud lifted by fiery saffron and Taif rose, with a dry wood base. Sharper and more modern than a mukhallat; the best choice for a Thursday evening.
• Rose oud — Damask or Taif rose over a soft oud. The most approachable oud, worn by men and women alike, and the usual gift choice for Eid.

How long should oud last?

At eau de parfum or extrait concentration, expect 8 to 12 hours on skin and days on fabric. Oud is also the family that benefits most from a single spray on clothing: it dries down slowly and becomes softer and sweeter over the evening.

Oud for first-time wearers

Start with a rose oud or a musk-heavy mukhallat, wear it in the evening, and give it an hour before you judge. Genuine oud always opens louder than it finishes. If you already love oud, the saffron and Cambodian blends in the 100 ml signature line are where the collection goes deepest.
